About The Book
The Storys are the envy of their neighbors: owners of the largest property on their East Coast island, they are rich, beautiful, and close. Until it all falls apart. The four children are suddenly dropped by their mother with a single sentence:
You know what you did.
They never hear from her again.
Years later, when 18-year-old cousins Aubrey, Milly, and Jonah Story receive a mysterious invitation to spend the summer at their grandmother’s resort, they have no choice but to follow their curiosity and meet the woman who’s been such an enigma their entire lives.
This entire family is built on secrets, right? It’s the Story legacy.
This summer, the teenagers are determined to discover the truth at the heart of their family. But some secrets are better left alone.

The Cousins is a novel written by Karen M McManus. Her debut novel “One Of Us Is Lying” is being adapted into a TV show so it was only natural that I would want to read more of her work. I could not wait to read this book! And was it worth it? A big yes!
The Cousins tells us about the three Story grandchildren, Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah. After years of silence and not hearing from their wealthy grandmother, the cousins are invited to work at her resort for the summer. This invitation is very out of the blue as their parents were cut off by their grandmother years ago and the sudden contact is very suspicious. And so the cousins decide to find out what happened all those years ago. Their investigation leads them to uncover a family secret that was best kept hidden.
I was able to finish the book in a single sitting. While the plot did start out a little slow for my liking, it quickly gained pace and made up for the slow start. I wondered when would the “action” start. Was disappointed that only in the last 30% of the book things started happening? Yes but the ending!? That ending blew my mind and I wish it was a bit longer than what it was. Told in both flashbacks and in the present day, the book helps the reader understand clearly what happened all those years ago. Now come to think about it, the slow beginning did nothing to the plot and only made the build-up to the finale better!
Karen M. McManus has a way with words that grabs your attention and leaves you hooked onto every page. I loved the setting of the island and as someone who has worked in a resort, I loved the relatability that I got from the setting. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and thrilling read.
