About The Book

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

I heard so many good things about the Grishaverse and couldn’t wait to dive into the story. Like I said earlier, this book has been on my list since forever? I kept putting it off and eventually, I forgot about it. It was only when Netflix released the airing date of the TV show did I think about picking up the book. How I wish I picked this up sooner? It has been a few days since I finished reading the book. My mind keeps going back to the story and its characters. I can truly say that I have never enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one.

Shadow And Bone is book one in the Grisha Trilogy and tells us the story of Alina, a refugee in Ravka who has a special gift. Her gift could be the saving grace of her country that has been torn apart (literally) by the Shadow Fold. When discovered, she is quickly taken away to join the Grisha and her life changes overnight. As she rises among the ranks of her fellow Grisha, she must choose where she wants to stand because her choice will change the course of her country forever.

Book Review: Shadow And Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Shadow And Bone had everything that I was looking for in a fantasy. There is political turmoil, magic, friendship, and rivalries. I found myself getting immersed into the world of the Grisha with each page. The book is relatively short and I flew through the story. The world-building is massive and detailed. Each chapter blends seamlessly into the next.

Final Thoughts

I listened to the audiobook and Lauren Fortgang does a brilliant job at narrating the book. I was hooked to each sentence! Netflix has chosen a wonderful book to adapt into a tv show and I cannot wait to watch it! Shadow and Bone is an entertaining read. Would I recommend this? Definitely! I loved it so much. In fact, I plan to re-read it again once I have finished with the rest of the Grishaverse. The Netflix show comes out in April so there is enough time for your to go through the series before then.
