The current coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for workers to leave their homes. To implement social distancing several organizations have instructed their employees to work from home. So how do you work from home more efficiently?
The way you work can determine how productive you are for the day. After working for a week I have narrowed down to a few ways that I feel help you work from home more efficiently.
Set Up A Home Office
In a corner of our house, we have turned a spare table that we had at home into a fully working desk. Now if you do not have a spare table it’s alright. There are several other places in your home that you can use. All you need is a surface on which you can set up a mini-office to store notes and your laptop. Bonus points if you can manage to keep it close to a power outlet.
I feel it’s more efficient to work at a desk. If you work on your couch or bed there are higher chances of you falling asleep. Sitting upright at a desk keeps you more alert towards your work.
Keep To Your Work Routine
Just because you are working from home, does not mean you can wake up whenever you feel like and eat at random times, Try and stick to your normal work routine as close as possible. Our bodies get into a habit of doing certain actions. Sure, you can make tiny changes here and there but on the whole, try not to do anything too drastic. The more changes you make, the harder it will be for you when you have to go back to work.
I realised this a few days into working from home. If I was at work I would keep a bottle of water next to me and sip on it now and then. Now, just because I was at home I thought I would get up and walk to the kitchen every time I got thirsty. Did I? Nope. Instead, I got too engrossed in my work and only realised how thirsty I was after hours. Try and drink water as much as you can. Staying hydrated also keeps you alert and less distracted.
Keep Away From Distractions
To avoid getting distracted, I created a separate work account on my laptop. This prevents me from accessing my blog and other social media while on duty. I also try to keep my phone away and use it only as much as necessary. Remember, you are at work. You might be at home, but you are still working just as much as you would if you went to your office.
Stretch Your Legs
I love sitting cross-legged. This is one of the small concessions I have allowed myself since I am home. The only problem this causes is that my legs fall asleep quite often, I realised this yesterday after I tried getting up after hours to get my lunch.
Every hour or so get up from your desk and walk about in your home. If you have a pet you can use this time to take them for their walks. You can also use this time to stretch a bit and exercise.
I know it can be really tempting to snack throughout the day. Being at home you have unlimited access to all the food in your house. If you do want to eat something between meals then go for something healthy like fruit or nuts. Eating too much throughout the day can make you feel sluggish and sleepy. This, in turn, can distract you from work.
